This recent maternity shoot brought together everything I love most about photography; romantic couple moments, editorial portraits, storytelling, and a beautifully styled concept. It was a golden hour dream set among the wildflowers and lush green paths of Zuid-Holland in springtime. The light, the colors, the details, it all came together in such a cinematic, emotional, and completely personal way.
My client Magi, a lifestyle content creator, arrived with a clear vision. She had prepared a Pinterest board full of romantic, earthy, boho sundress inspiration. Think soft textures and romantic sun-drenched moments. Every element was carefully thought out; the floral basket, the twin baby clothes hanging between trees and the photo albums to be filled with precious memories. These weren’t just props but also the curated details from her baby shower.
Magi coordinated her outfit and makeup beautifully (honestly, her makeup was so good I kept admiring it while editing!). She and her husband dressed in light neutral tones (always my recommendation for shoots) that reflected the golden warmth of the setting sun and the softness of the location. The styling paired so beautifully with the setting - in my mind golden hour and boho chic are married and inseparable. They just work together so well.
What made this shoot even more special was the story it told. Magi and her husband are expecting twins, a boy and a girl, and this is their first pregnancy. They wanted to document this moment of anticipation before their world shifts into a new chapter: a family of four. The setup and floral elements even echoed their wedding aesthetic, adding another layer of nostalgia and intimacy.
As a photographer, I thrive when clients are this involved and excited. I love storytelling and blending styles - love shoots, portraiture, soft editorial portraits. I always try to structure my sessions to reflect that. Some of the best advice I’ve received about storytelling through photos is to include five essential types of shots: landscape, full body, waist-up, close-up portraits, and detail. This session had them all.
I shot most of the session on my Canon R5 with my trusty 28–70mm f/2 lens and a few wide shots with my Canon RF 16mm lens. I also shot a few pictures on a Portra 400 roll which is waiting to be developed, but I can’t wait to see the analog magic come through.
This maternity shoot was everything I hope for in a session: a couple deeply in love, a story worth telling, and a setting that wrapped it all in light.
