As a Netherlands family photographer, I first documented this beautiful family during a surprise proposal at Rotterdam’s historic Hotel New York. Seasons later, our creative path brought us back together for an outdoor autumn family session in the scenic Achterhoek. Bathed in soft, moody overcast light, this boho-styled family photoshoot captures the candid beauty of parenthood amidst the shifting colors of a Dutch autumn.
Some clients you meet once and remember. Others you get to walk alongside through entire chapters of their life. The Biezenaars are the second kind.
It started with a proposal. A nervous plan, Hotel New York in Rotterdam, a romanic surprise and an enthusiastic "YES!". That kind of beginning stays with you.
So when they came back for a pregnancy shoot, it felt like a continuation of something. And when they came back again — this time with twins — it felt like the most natural thing in the world to want to make something beautiful for them.
I set up in the Achterhoek in autumn, which is its own kind of magic. Draped fabrics, fairy lights, the kind of boho outdoor setup that looks effortless and takes two hours. The rain had other ideas. But we worked between the clouds the way you do when the day is too good to abandon, and the soft overcast light ended up doing something lovely to everything it touched.
What stayed with me wasn't the set or the weather challenges. It was watching them with those babies, that constant orbit of attention and tenderness. And knowing where this family started, that surprised yes in Rotterdam, made every frame feel like it was part of a longer story.
That's what family photography is, really. Not a single moment but a thread running through time. I'm grateful to have held a small piece of theirs.
