There is a distinct magic to photographing estate weddings in the Dutch countryside, and this multicultural celebration at Landgoed van Voorst is the perfect example. Capturing this vibrant Dutch-Mexican wedding as a wedding photographer in the Netherlands reminded me why I love intimate, detail-driven days. Despite the classic September drizzle, the historic manor house grounds provided an elegant backdrop for their emotional reception, lively mariachi music, and timeless style.
Where Two Worlds Met
September in Gelderland has a particular kind of beauty — the estates go quiet, the trees start to turn, and if it drizzles, which it did, the whole landscape takes on a softness that no amount of planning could manufacture.
Landgoed Van Voorst was made for a day like this. A Dutch manor house, perfectly manicured lawn with a tent holding everything that mattered. Inside, chandeliers and rich patterned wallpaper and flowers stacked ceiling-high. Outside, the kind of green that only exists after rain.
Koen stood at the end of the aisle and waited. When Andy walked down the aisle, he didn't hold it together. He didn't try to. That moment — the hand on the chest, the overwhelmed stillness of a man watching the person he loves walk toward him — is the kind of thing you can't direct and can't recreate. You can only be ready for it.
The ceremony was theirs in the fullest sense. Two families, two countries, two languages of love finding a common vocabulary. And when the mariachi band started playing Mexico arrived in Gelderland, warm and unapologetic, filling the grey September air with color and joy.
On the cake, a handmade muñeca topper — traditional Mexican cloth dolls, dark-haired bride in lace, blonde groom in blue. Made by hand, brought from far away, placed on top of four tiers of flowers and fondant. A small thing that held a lot of meaning, the way the best details always do.
This is what a wedding looks like when two worlds don't compromise — they celebrate each other instead.
